isla is an island-inspired brand with big dreams & an even bigger story! Created during the Covid-19 pandemic, we were looking for local yet contemporary solutions for the Sri Lankan interior design industry, which took a hit during the time. Projects were shut down because of import restrictions & we had to find ways to pivot in response to these hiccups to find solutions within our own country. That’s when ‘isla’ came as a eureka moment to us- Formed to give local craft & material a bigger platform, we aspired to give it a competitive edge through modern design & precision. The materials we work with are an extension of our core values; sustainability, fair trade & self-sufficiency.
Incorporating locally sourced organic cane, rattan & timber raw materials therefore came naturally to us (pun intended). At isla, we simply add the designer’s touch to the crafting industry which our local artisans already have a generational clutch on by the craftspeople before them. isla also fulfills the role of preserving these ancient industries that are waning because of cheaper alternatives like plastic. In keeping with our design philosophy of ‘natural contemporary’, our designs emulate an atmosphere that’s designer, comforting & cosy. Newer research shows that elements of the natural world or even reminders of them have a positive effect on our mental & physical health- – which adds to our purpose & ultimately makes the brand more holistic.
